Andover, MA

Andover is a town located in Essex County, Massachusetts. Andover was first colonized in 1636, and at that time it was known by the Native American name Cochichawicke, after a nearby waterway. In 1646, the area was officially incorporated as the Town of Andover, after the town in England from which many of the town’s earliest immigrants came. Since the town’s earliest days, manufacturing has played a significant role in its growth.

The region’s first powder mill was built in 1775, paper production began in 1789, and several woolen mills developed in the early nineteenth century. Phillips Academy, one of the oldest and most prestigious independent secondary “prep” schools in the United States, is located in Andover. Established by Samuel Phillips in 1770, the school currently has around 1,100 students.
